Fish Creek, WI
South Haven, MI
The boat looks quite clean near the start of a cruise. The unique Art Deco lighthouse of Port Washington, WI can be seen in the background.
Manitowoc Harbor with lighthouse at far left.
Sister Bay, Door County. Junk-rigged boats are getting new respect, though the aerodynamics of how their sails work is still not understood.
Snail Shell Harbor is probably the most perfectly formed natural harbor in all of the Great Lakes. Our masthead annemometer was seeing 40 knots during the night but it seemed we were on a mill pond.
On Michigan’s remote Upper Peninsula, the harbor served the iron smelters of (now abandoned) Fayette.
Beaver Island Jail
Preserved home of Beaver Island’s sainted first doctor.
At the BI farmer’s market this beautiful Ichneumon Wasp landed on Happy’s chair.
Beaver Island has a wonderful natural harbor. Ahead is the car ferry to Charlevoix, MI.
Abandoned lighthouse on Grays Reef, approaching the Straits of Mackinac.
The “Mighty Mac” bridge
I think there were a few inches to spare.
Les Cheneaux Islands (“The Snows”) actually means “the bowels”, which is appropriate. You sail in one end, wind back and forth through a very narrow channel for miles and miles, and finally get “pooped” out the other end!
Lots of cute little boathouses, each containing a little wooden jewel of a runabout.
Back under the bridge going the other way.
Sunset, Harbor Springs, MI
In Harbor Springs, we find that the Moth North American Championships begin the next day. Conceived in England last century as a cheap boat that could be made from a single piece of plywood, over the years they have evolved into a high-tech carbon-fiber and mylar wonder on hydrofoils.
That little thing probably costs more than our boat!
The Woman at her work.
She actually looks like she’s ENJOYING this!
Home Sweet Home
A Pearson Invicta yawl anchored off Northport, MI. Beautiful early fiberglass design.
Dramatic sunset, Leland Harbor.
Light-air downwind sailing under spinnaker
But who are we overhauling?
Its the bark Europa out of Amsterdam.
You can sign on as crew all along her many routes, including Antarctica.
Beautiful “woody” in the channel into Saugatuck.
View of Saugatuck from the top of the dune.
