We find ourselves crossing the finish line of the Chicago to Mackinac Island Race with some of the larger competitors, with the Grand Hotel in the distance. At day’s end, Whitney Bay is a familiar and welcome harbor. We love watching loons there.
Nice sailing day, steady at 15. After lunch wind switched from 15 to 25 steady, in about 5 minutes. Twenty-three, gusting to 30. Ripping alone on jib alone (after Happy wisely suggesting dropping the main). Nicely balanced helm, beam-reaching at 7 knots, touching 8. Had to turn north directly into the strong winds to make final approach to this new harbor for us. Luckily it was deep enough! Long, tiring day.
As we pass Magnetic Island and Magnetic Reef I see that our compass disagrees with the GPS by a full ten degrees! Meldrum bay has a great historic museum and resturant, but sadly no longer a grocery store. Customs check here is a phone call from the special blue ‘Canadian customs phone booth’.
One of the more storied anchorages in the North Channel. Nine other boats crowded into this tiny place!
FORTY boats at this Great Lakes Cruising Club Wilderness Rally!
